Reason: New engine regulations in Formula 1 season 2014
Goal: More differences between Engine and Chassis components regarding to scoring and strategy.
Name of components: The formula 1 teams will be re-assigned prior to each season
Group 1: 1.) Renault (factory engine) [Red Bull + Lotus] 2.) Mercedes (factory engine) [Mercedes + McLaren] 3.) Ferrari (factory engine) [Ferrari]
Group 2: 4.) Mercedes (customer engine) [Force India + Williams] 5.) Renault (customer engine) [Toro Rosso + Caterham] 6.) Ferrari (customer engine) [Sauber + Marussia]
Cost allocation: The definition of the component costs will be done before each season anew. Because of the low number of components, the 2 groups (factory engine and customer engine) will be kept for the cost allocation. Price changes take place only within a group:
Costs group 1: 1.) Renault (factory engine) 36 Mio. 2.) Mercedes (factory engine) 32 Mio. 3.) Ferrari (factory engine) 28 Mio. Lower limit: 25 Mio.
Costs group 2: 4.) Mercedes (customer engine) 16 Mio. 5.) Renault (customer engine) 12 Mio. 6.) Ferrari (customer engine) 8 Mio. Lower limit: 5 Mio.
Scoring: The engine component can consist of one, two or three Formula 1 teams. The scoring system has to be applicable on all 3 variations.
Scoring Qualifying: The ranking is made according to the average of the positions of the assigned F1 drivers. Component consisting of 3 Formula 1 teams: 3 best-placed drivers of each F1 team + the best-placed of the remaining 3 drivers are used for the calculation. In case of an equal score the component with the better single ranking will be ranked in front. Pos. 1: 5 points Pos. 2: 4 points Pos. 3: 3 points Pos. 4: 2 points Pos. 5: 1 point
Scoring Race: The points of the assigned F1 drivers are added. Only classified drivers are awarded with points. Component consisting of 3 Formula 1 teams: 3 best-placed drivers of each F1 team + the best-placed of the remaining 3 drivers are used for the calculation. Pos. 1: 15 points (in case of a component with only 1 assigned F1 team) Pos. 2: 14 points Pos. 3: 13 points . Pos. 10: 6 points Pos. 11: 5 points All other classified drivers: 5 points
If a component consists of 2 or 3 Formula 1 teams only the half points are used. The final result is rounded up to a integer number.
Minus points: Engine blow-up in the race:-3 points, gear box or engine change causing penalty:-3 points Minus points can be drawn off 2 times per race and component. (If the component consists of 1 F1 team, only 1 time)
Example scoring (race): Ferrari (factory engine): Alonso Pos. 3, Massa Pos. 8: 13 + 8 = 21 points Renault (factory engine): Vettel: Pos. 1, Raikkonen: Pos. 2, Webber Pos. 5, Grosjean Pos. 14: 7,5 + 7 + 5,5 + 2,5 = 22,5 -> 23 points
This is my suggestion for the reform of the PFRL engine component. I would like to discuss this topic and I am interested in your contributions. |

Not many comments on this! My opinion (assuming this is still being considered) would be.... - All for having different ways of scoring the engine and chassis components to differentiate them. The scoring system seems interesting. - However, a down side of the scoring system proposed could be how all classified drivers worse than 10th score 5 points. It means that if, say, Ferrari have a race where Alonso and Raikkonen (next season) are 8th and 9th, the Ferrari part would potentially only score a few more points than the worst part would (if their drivers all finish), despite a huge value difference in the parts. It doesn't feel quite fair. - If there are penalties for engine blow ups etc, you'd need to make sure the Ferrari part doesn't benefit due to having only one team in it. - I'm not a big fan of narrowing down the number of components though (going from 11 choices down to 6). It reduces the opportunity to make smart choices for points/budget gains, which is how top players have the chance to stand out.

Maverick, you've done it again! This is brilliant. Just as the F1 teams will be coming to terms with new engines, we will be trying to optimize the PFRL engine component!
Also I think this works well with the overall PFRL philosophy. There should be more differentiation between engine and chassis and your proposal nicely mimics the reality of works/customer arrangements.
